Parquet Fox

Open a Large CSV File Online

Published July 2, 2026 · Updated August 19, 2026

Open a million-row CSV in the browser without freezing the tab—preview limits, SQL filters, and when a warehouse is the better tool.

Huge CSVs stall naive viewers

Excel and a DOM table both try to hold too much at once. A million rows can freeze the tab even when the file fits on disk.

You need a preview, then SQL, not a full render.

Open the CSV locally, then LIMIT

The CSV viewer and the homepage use the same app. DuckDB WASM reads the file in the tab. The file is not uploaded to a Parquet Fox server for open, query, or export.

Caps we enforce: Parquet up to 500 MB; CSV and JSON up to 2048 MB compressed on disk. A gzipped CSV can expand far past that in RAM. Browser memory depends on content, not only the compressed size.

Workflow:

  1. Open a file (or the CSV viewer) and drop the CSV.
  2. Run SELECT * … LIMIT 100 before you scroll.
  3. Filter or aggregate in SQL, then export only the result.

When the tab is the wrong tool

Use DuckDB CLI, pandas, or a warehouse when the uncompressed CSV will not fit device RAM, when you need a nightly job, or when you must join many remote sources. The browser is a peek and a filtered export.

What to do next

  1. Open the CSV on the CSV viewer and confirm a limited preview.
  2. If you outgrow the tab, move the same SQL to a local DuckDB command.

FAQ

Can I open a million-row CSV in the browser?
Often yes, if you preview with a LIMIT and do not paint the entire file in the DOM. A WASM SQL engine can scan more than a naive web table can render.
Is the CSV uploaded to a server?
In Parquet Fox, no. The file is read in the tab. It is not uploaded to a Parquet Fox server for open, query, or export.
